What is dawstuff?

I use Digital Performer, Pro Tools and Logic for my work in music production. I'm constantly trying to figure out how to do something I already know how to do in one DAW in one of the others. Sometimes I figure it out, sometimes I beat my head for awhile only to discover that you can't do X in DAW Y.

My usual resources for this information are [Unicornation http://www.unicornation.com], the [Logic Users Group http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/] and the [Digidesign User Conference http://duc.digidesign.com]. Unfortunately, it's often difficult to find exactly what I'm looking for by wading through long threads. The user groups also don't support uploading of files for illustration. I'm hoping to get that figured out and fully-supported here.

This site is my attempt to collect this kind of cross-DAW information in one place, in a searchable database. I invite other users of DP, Logic, PT and Cubase/Nuendo to contribute. I hope it will be self-correcting and that expert users of each DAW will fill in the blanks and correct misunderstandings. Apologies in advance to Cubase/Nuendo users: I don't use Cubase or Nuendo at this time, so information on those apps will be sparse until Cubase users begin to contribute.

For the record, I don't expect this site to replace Unicornation, LUG or the DUC. I do hope it will end up being a useful tool for those who find themselves frequenting all three sites. By the way, it's Mac-biased because that's what I use.

Getting Started

If you're ready to get started, select an area from the navigation sidebar at left. You'll see the current database entries for that area. You will be able to add new entries or edit existing entries without a Wiki login.

The site is a DabbleDB database embedded in a Wiki. Feel free to edit the Wiki as you see fit, but I ask that you register and log in to do so. The DabbleDB database is hosted under their Creative Commons license and the data is freely available to all.

A note about the database organization:

I tried to keep things very simple. Features are organized into seven categories:

1. Global features
2. Editing and selection
3. MIDI
4. Audio
5. Mixing and routing
6. Notation
7. Import/export

There's definitely lots of overlap in these areas, but I think it's a good starting point. I'm open to suggestions for other ways to organize the data. In any case, I'd prefer just to get the information recorded and not obsess over the perfect database structure. At least for the time being.

You'll get a sense for what I think belongs where by seeing what I've already entered. I have a big backlog of notes I'm planning to get entered now that this is up and running. Stay tuned.
